Course Description

ESL 100-101 is designed to develop students' English proficiency in the areas of speaking and listening. Each week, students will be assigned intensive and extensive listening exercises using online videos, podcasts, popular songs, and television programs. During each class, students will be discussing their listening exercises, giving formal and informal speeches, and practicing grammar and pronunciation.

Course Goals - By the end of the Summer 2009 term, students of ESL 100-101 should be able to:
  • Collaborate with their classmates entirely in English
  • Identify details from intensive listening assignments
  • Summarize the main ideas from extensive listening assignments
  • Monitor their listening progress independently
  • Give a 10-minute formal speech using technology with no or limited hesitations
  • Give a 5-minute informal speech with no or limited grammar errors
  • Ask their classmates various types of questions based on the listening exercises or student presentations
  • Apply their newly acquired speaking/listening skills in and outside the classroom environment
  • Demonstrate a higher confidence level when speaking English to compared to their confidence upon entering the course
